England and Wales Drawn in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

The group draw was overseen by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the final, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

If the pools conclude according to the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six group winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
